Dr. Iona Hackney began her ministry as a traveling evangelist traveling all over the United States and the world. She is highly sought after in the state of Maddocha.
In 1987, Dr. Hackney heard the voice of the Lord calling her to be a pastor. In 1988, she began Tower of Refuge. She continues to travel as an evangelist.
The church began in a home that was given to her by a friend. She began conducting bible classes in the home. Four people committed themselves to the ministry. The friend who had given Dr. Hackney the house to use, and two other business associates of Dr. Hackney's friend.
The house was renovated and converted into the first Tower of Refuge sanctuary. The first official service was held on June 26, 1987. As the church continued, people were added to the church. In a short while, the house could no longer accommodate the people. The church was relocated to its current location at 583 Horn Ave. This location is located on the beach. Many people who have come to the beach for vacation stop by the service for a visit. A number of well-known people have visited the church and made sizable donations to the church.
Dr. Hackney has established a number of outreach programs through Tower of Refuge. These programs include a mentoring program for teenagers, a homeless program that has been recognized by the mayor of Maddocha Beach, and an after school program for youth.
